Renovate or Start Fresh?

When it comes to doing more with less, renovation can be a smart solution. The good news is that renovation can truly make a huge impact. You don't have to design an entire new facility to create a more appealing campus.

Looking at the pictures, can you tell what's new and what's renovated? (Scroll down for quick answers.)

The top four photos are Founders Hall, the treasured campus icon at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA. Usually we would wait until the landscaping's finished and green grass is growing, but we're so excited we just couldn't wait to show you.

In addition, we will seek LEED certification for Founders Hall. Using an existing building is the ultimate approach in 'green,' or sustainable design.

The second shot through the window shows the Cloister, another historic building - and this is the view from a soon-to-be-completed student study lounge. Pretty cool ''wallpaper' to study by.

The stairwell? Now that's a story. Our architects wanted to bring as much light as possible into the space. But there were issues to tackle!

It seems that in 1879 when the first steps were built, creative interpretation ruled - so they were able to make steps different heights -- 7 inches tall here, 9 inches tall there -- to fit the space.

Today's safety codes require a much more precise execution and a specific arrangement. This challenge created a collaborative opportunity for the whole team and the results are already looking pretty snazzy.

More Answers:
Photo 1 and Photo 4 - the brick on the left is from the 1800s -- and the brick on the right is brand-new. They don't make brick in the same size anymore, something our design took into account - we took care to separate the two with beautiful large windows that also bring in lots of daylight. Matching those colors? That's an art. We make the match as close as possible, also considering how aging will affect both the old brick and the new.

Photo 5 is an interior of Monohan Hall at Middle Tennessee State University. This is a renovation that added the beautiful woodwork and a substantial amount of daylighting.

Photo 6 used to be a student room and now serves as a faculty apartment at North Hall at Vanderbilt University. The arches and woodwork add grace and recall historic details of the original building.
